Is it possible to protect biodiversity using AI?

The alliance between cutting-edge technology and biodiversity conservation opens up exciting opportunities. Enerfip is taking a closer look!

Today, the issue of biodiversity preservation is on everyone's lips. Faced with current and future environmental challenges, it is legitimate to ask what solutions are available to address the issues threatening our planet. Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is therefore emerging as a technological innovation likely to change tomorrow. The alliance between cutting-edge technology and biodiversity conservation opens up exciting prospects, suggesting that AI could play a decisive role in protecting fragile ecosystems. Enerfip is looking into the subject!

What is AI?

Before going any further, we'll give you a definition of what AI, or Artificial Intelligence, is. It's a branch of computer science that aims to create systems capable of performing tasks that normally require human intelligence. What does that mean? AI makes it possible to develop machines capable of simulating certain aspects of human intelligence, or even surpassing them in certain areas of application.

Artificial Intelligence, an ally for the climate

The emergence of Artificial Intelligence opens up promising new perspectives in the fight against the challenges of climate change. This technology is positioning itself as a key ally in the quest for innovative and sustainable solutions to mitigate environmental impacts.

AI plays a crucial role in processing meteorological data, for example. Thanks to it, it is possible to obtain more accurate weather forecasts and, as a result, to develop more effective adaptation and mitigation strategies according to the ongoing climate change. The projections it provides make it possible to prevent certain climate disasters by targeting high-risk areas. Combined with mapping, AI plans sustainable development measures, reduces risks, and ensures the safety of vulnerable communities.

To solve global climate challenges, AI is also being used to monitor and audit air pollution in major cities. With data extracted by artificial intelligence, the government can assess urban air quality and propose appropriate solutions. Furthermore, AI plays a key role in achieving carbon neutrality. How? By optimizing electricity distribution networks, increasing the efficiency of renewable energies, and minimizing environmental impact.

Artificial intelligence to protect flying species

AI can predict climate change, but that's not all! Did you know that it's also an innovative solution for protecting biodiversity, and especially flying species? Thanks to advanced detection technologies, algorithms, and real-time data analysis systems, AI offers innovative solutions to reduce the risk of collisions between avian wildlife and human infrastructure.

Specialized companies are leveraging AI-based systems to detect and anticipate the movements of birds and bats, minimizing negative impacts on biodiversity. Artificial Intelligence improves the safety of flying species and promotes the operational efficiency of human installations. In short? AI promotes the coexistence of technology and nature.

Committed by nature, Enerfip invites you to invest in the BioDiv-Wind Croissance project to accelerate the deployment of flying fauna detection systems and support an innovative, virtuous, and French initiative. (Cock-a-doodle-doo!). Through four AI-based solutions, BioDiv-Wind encourages the preservation of the biodiversity of our natural ecosystems. So what are these solutions?

  1. Safe-Wind: This is a device for detecting intrusions by flying animals using a video analysis system.
  2. Bird Sentinel: This is an automated, energy-autonomous video detection technology device dedicated to studying the aerial activity of diurnal animals.
  3. XBird Radar: It allows the detection and tracking of flying animals over long distances.
  4. AudioBat: Thanks to it, the acoustic detection and identification of bats is possible.

Key figures
Biodiv-Wind operates on the international market with more than 650 SafeWind systems and around 40 Bird Sentinels sold worldwide.

Artificial intelligence at the service of marine biodiversity

Did you know?
“10% of the world's coral reefs and 20% of its atolls are located in French waters. Nearly 10% of the world's marine species diversity is present there.”

Data from the page, “SDG 14 – Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”, from Agenda 2030 France.

Avian fauna is not the only one to be the subject of an AI-based project in France! Fish-Predict, for its part, highlights artificial intelligence (AI) at the heart of the management of coastal areas and marine ecosystems.

What is it about? The project aims to contribute to better planning of management strategies, supporting both biodiversity and the development of emerging countries. What does this mean? Whether in terms of coastal urbanization, access to marine reserves, species conservation plans, or fisheries economics.

The researchers also want to provide tools to maintain biodiversity in a context of recurring climate change. In short, it's about anticipating actions to protect and conserve marine biodiversity. This vision of tomorrow's world reflects the very essence of SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) 15, "life on land." Indeed, the fifteenth goal aims to implement sustainable management of terrestrial ecosystems while preserving biodiversity and soils.

For a sustainable future, it is necessary to support innovative and green projects. Through the responsible investment platform, Enerfip, you can focus on committed, transparent projects that accelerate the energy transition.
