What is SERD?

Are you familiar with SERD? Enerfip tells you more about it and gives you tips for reducing your waste!

November 18, 2023, is no ordinary day. Far from it! It marks the beginning of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR). This event aims to raise awareness that waste reduction is not an individual issue, but a collective one. By slightly modifying our consumption habits, it is possible to change our model, namely, extend the lifespan of our objects and reduce our quantity of waste. The EWWR therefore represents a means of communication on a subject that concerns us all!

In this desire to raise awareness among the general public, but also among businesses and communities, about consuming/producing better and throwing away less, Enerfip offers you this guide to the EWWR.

EWWR, what is it?

What?EWWR stands for European Week for Waste Reduction.
What is the theme? The main topic is packaging.
What message? “In this context, the SERD is mobilizing to help us better understand the environmental impacts generated by packaging and present a set of practices that we can implement to reduce our packaging” (SERD).
When? From November 18 to 26, 2023.
By whom? By ADEME (the Agency for Ecological Transition).
Where? In France, but not only! This event also takes place throughout Europe.
For whom? Anyone who wishes to become more involved in the ecological transition and mobilize for change.

What are the challenges of the EWWR?

Now that this event is clearer to you, let us present its various objectives. Even if you are familiar with most of them, it is important to highlight them again in order to always commit to the same goal: that of a more sustainable future.

The EWWR aims to raise awareness among the European population of the following points.

  1. Raising awareness of the 3Rs (Reuse, Re-employment, Repair) by better informing consumers.
  2. Mobilizing European citizens on their waste management and thus transforming the system.
  3. Provide tools and training to EWWR stakeholders to adopt eco-responsible actions and behaviors.
  4. Promote the work of EWWR participants.

How to limit your waste production?

Key figures
– 5.6 million tons of household packaging in 2022.
– 13.4 million tons of household, restaurant, industrial, and commercial packaging in 2021.
– 1,700 packages per year per inhabitant in 2022.
– Each of us produces 568 kg of waste per year, which ends up in our trash cans and sorting containers, as well as in recycling centers. That's twice as much as 40 years ago!

For individuals

Just because the project is big doesn't mean you can't take action. Every citizen can, in fact, get involved at their own level. How? Through changes in habits or new daily actions. Enerfip helps you see things more clearly with some concrete examples.

  • Use reusable or re-usable containers in retail stores.
  • Drink tap water.
  • Say no to printed advertising.
  • Join waste collections with Surfrider.
  • Clean out your mailbox.
  • Choose cardboard over plastic…

Each of these “small” actions helps limit waste, preserve natural resources, biodiversity, and the climate. Moreover, in addition to reducing your environmental impact, you save money!

For businesses

Don't think that as a company, you can't take action. Quite the opposite! The actions taken within your company can motivate people to continue them at home. Don't worry, we're not going to leave you without ideas for action! Here are some solutions to develop in a professional setting.

  • Follow sorting instructions and prioritize recycling.
  • Raise awareness among your employees by organizing a clean-up action.
  • Create products whose entire life cycle has a lesser impact on the environment (eco-design).
  • Reuse used paper as scrap paper.
  • Engage in more responsible communication...

By proposing these actions, you are conveying your vision of the company of tomorrow and, in doing so, becoming an agent of change. It's your turn!

Take action with Enerfip!
