The energy transition in the Île-de-France region

What initiatives in Île-de-France can accelerate the transition to a more sustainable model?

IDF Investissements & Territories, through Enerfip, offers to finance a portfolio of renewable energy production and distribution and energy efficiency projects in the Île-de-France region. With this in mind, we are interested in the strategy for the energy transition in the Île-de-France departments. So, what are the specific energy challenges in Île-de-France? What local initiatives can accelerate the transition to a more sustainable model?

Current assessment of the energy transition in Île-de-France

Since 2020, the Île-de-France region has been following a roadmap to meet the challenges of the energy transition. Each year, it is reviewed and updated by services and operators of the Ile-de-France State such as DRIEAT (Regional and Interdepartmental Directorate for the Environment, Planning and Transport), DRIHL (Regional and Interdepartmental Directorate for Accommodation and Housing), DRIAAF (Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Forestry), DDT (Departmental Directorate for Territories) and ADEME (Environment and Energy Management Agency). Their objective is to prioritize actions to be carried out during the year such as the renovation of buildings, the development of renewable energies and the transition to clean mobility.

💡 Did you know?
In 2023, 81% of the 167 actions planned by the roadmap have been implemented.

So, what was the year 2024 marked by? It is part of a forward-looking approach with the regional rollout of various national measures such as the implementation of the renewable energy acceleration law, the establishment of the regional energy committee, the creation of regional COPs (Conferences of the Parties) and the Green Fund. In short, 2024 is synonymous with commitment to the energy transition.

Ambitions for the energy transition in Île-de-France

🔢 Key figures
By 2030, Île-de-France aims to:

reduce energy consumption in Île-de-France by 17%, with an ambitious approach to thermal renovation of buildings;
– cover up to 20% of consumption in the Île-de-France region thanks to locally produced renewable and recovered energy, with aggressive development of local production;
– achieve a rate of 40% green energy in the energy mix consumed in Île-de-France, by reducing energy consumption and developing renewable energy.

Figures from the “Energy Transition Ambitions of the Île-de-France Region: Multi-Energy Visions”.

In terms of ecological ambitions, Île-de-France is not left behind… Far from it! It has also modeled its strategy for the energy mix of the Île-de-France region up to 2030. In line with national, European and international guidelines for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and atmospheric pollutants, it focuses mainly on the evolution of energy demand and the development of renewable and recovered energies.

  1. The first strategic axis concerns the thermal renovation of buildings built before 1990. Be aware that they still represent 678 million m² of buildings in Île-de-France!
  2. The second axis of improvement is linked to mobility. The Region makes a point of moving to sober and low-emission mobility, as there are more than 40 million daily journeys in this territory. Opting for sustainable mobility would also help clean the air, thus contributing to public health and the quality of life of residents.
  3. The third axis is dedicated to renewable energies. They must be developed, particularly heating networks and their greening. Today, only 388 400 homes can be connected to existing networks, while the potential is immense!
  4. The fourth axis focuses on reducing air pollution, mainly due to road traffic and wood heating.

To replace energy-intensive equipment and thermally renovate the departments of the Île-de-France region, everyone's mobilization is necessary. Efforts towards energy efficiency and sobriety, as well as the aggressive development of renewable energy sources, must be combined at all levels to green the energy mix consumed in the Île-de-France region. This is why network managers are supporting the transformations of the energy landscape in the Île-de-France region through flexible solutions made possible by coupling networks with digital technologies. They help maintain the supply-demand balance while orchestrating different levels and levers of the energy transition.

IDF Investissements & Territories: a unique initiative to imagine the energy mix of the Île-de-France region

Before explaining how the IDF Investissements & Territories project fits into the priorities of the Île-de-France region in terms of sustainable and economic development, reducing territorial inequalities and job creation, let us remind you who this actor is! Created in July 2020 at the initiative of the Region Ile-de-France, IDF Investissements et Territoires is a semi-public SEM (mixed economy company) specializing in real estate investment in Ile-de-France. Its mission is, on the one hand, to strengthen the attractiveness of the region by promoting projects with a high environmental and social impact and, on the other hand, to encourage actions of this type in order to achieve the low-carbon trajectory of the Region.

Via our platform, IDF Investissements et Territoires wishes to obtain funds to finance renewable energy production and distribution and energy efficiency projects in its subsidiary dedicated to the energy transition created jointly with the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignation and Enerfip: IDF Énergies et Territoires. What does this mean? The project portfolio consists of:

  • 5 photovoltaic projects;
  • 2 methanization projects;
  • 1 project hydrogen;
  • 3 geothermal projects;
  • 3 mixed energy efficiency projects.
