Photovoltaic energy is the transformation of light energy into electricity using special materials called semiconductors. Light, or rather the photons that compose it, excites certain electrons in the atoms of these materials. Freed from the atom, these electrons can then circulate within the material, creating an electric current and a potential difference. The photovoltaic effect was discovered in 1839 by Antoine-César Becquerel, grandfather of Henry Becquerel, known for his work on radioactivity.
